Some have called it the most extraordinary playing ever seen in this spectacular sporting competition, and the DVD will no doubt confirm these statements.

The tournament was in Wales and the scenic Celtic Manor Resort was the first time host, however, powerful rain storms set the tournament up for another first, the game had a Monday finish, as Europe, together with the USA, ended with a fourth day decider.

After three days of tough gaming, not to mention that it was in front of the 40,000 strong crowd, rain soaked but never faltering in passion and spirit, Europe’s resolute 12 had managed a surely momentous three point lead. On day three and with all 24 golfers out on the course the hosts, encouraged by the authoritative Lee Westwood, took five and half points out of a possible six.

The start of the first ever Monday in this tournament saw the mist slowly lift and the sun finally start to shine through. The fans had seen Tiger Woods lead an assault as Captain Corey’s boys boosted the scoreboard. For Europe, poker like Luke Donald, enticing Ian Poulter and the outstanding Miguel Angel Jimenez all managed to deliver precious points. Then it came down to McDowell – that last man standing in the competition, already The US Open Champion, already The Wales Open Champion, surely he could bring one of the most prestigious golf trophies ever designed home…

Relive the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor with this DVD and bring home the excitement all over again.

The press release for Viva Riva reads:

For charismatic criminal, Riva, a sudden burst of stolen wealth ignites an exhilarating, hedonistic and perilous journey through one of the most intriguing cities in Africa – Kinshasa.

VIVA RIVA! expertly combines fresh rhythm, violence and eroticism and ignites a new wave of African cinema, whilst demonstrating the intelligence, wit and technical accomplishment of European cinema.

In treating his audience to an imaginative portrait of vibrant rogues competing on the streets of Kinshasa, trailblazing Congolese writer/director Djo Tunda Wa Munga mixes a heady cocktail of rich colour, dynamism and local music which marks him as an emerging force in World Cinema.

If you are having a night in and are in the mood for a feel good funny film, then House is the movie for you. Full of laughs and entertaining scenarios, it is sure to have you in stitches.

This 2000 British comedy – directed by Julian Kemp – stars well known names including Bruce Forsyth, Keith Chegwin and Kelly Macdonald. Together, they form the ultimate comedic cast.

We see Welsh-Italian Giovanni Anzani’s bingo hall, La Scala, reaching the end of its hay-day. The bingo hall is ageing and run down, but the staff who work there remain loyal. It is up to them to work as a team to save the bingo hall which their lives seem to revolve around. Linda, (Kelly Macdonald), discovers she has a psychic ability to predict bingo numbers. The team hope they can use this skill to save the bingo hall from being driven out of business by a new huge bingo hall planned to be opened close by.

This review doesn’t give too much away, so if you want to research the film a little more, then there are plenty of trailers and soundtracks you can find online to get a little taster. So while you play Cheeky Bingo to get in the bingo mood, or you’re just browsing the web, you can watch a preview and see if it is your kind of film. Alternatively, reading reviews will give you a brief overview of the plot and some information about the production.

Despite the plot being based around a bingo hall, this dull premise is brought to life with the cleverly written script and the well cast characters. It could be summed up in one mysterious yet entertaining phrase of – The ultimate Welsh Psychic Bingo Movie. It adds a whole new level to this typical OAP game, plus it has a quirky plot which you couldn’t possibly have predicted.

Fans of QI on the BBC (or, more often, on Dave) who have a thirst for knowledge and how things work will be interested to know about Curiosity, a new show on the Discovery Channel. Curiosity feeds our desire for knowledge and ‘what makes things tick’ by offering up explanations on some of the most pertinent questions of our age.

Such questions answered include ‘just why, exactly, is sex enjoyable’ – something that is sure to draw large viewing figures, and ‘what really would happen on earth if aliens attacked us’?

While these may be the sorts of questions that get asked down the pub, or asked by students while they sit around their dorms watching ‘Pingu’, the Discovery Channel aims to answer them properly, leaving no stone unturned.

Each episode of Curiosity takes one particular question and examines it thoroughly, looking for the definitive answer. Also, rather than students or blokes down the pub, Curiosity draws on the knowledge and reasoning power of some of the sharpest minds of our age, such as Professor Stephen Hawking, and stars from the world of stage and screen such as Robin Williams, Morgan Freeman and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Other questions answered in this series include ‘Why do we dream?’, ‘Would you want to know how you were going to die?’ and the simple little question of ‘Is there a god?’.

If you’re curious about the way the world works, or if you just want to watch something seriously interesting, then you’ll want to catch Curiosity.

We all have our little eccentricities, our passions, and this short film titled ‘The Keeper’ is a funny little documentary about a man with a passion for collecting. However, unlike most people who ‘collect’ the man doesn’t seek out model trains, coins or even beer mats. No, this collection consists of debit card statements – which makes it the perfect little film for banking giant Santander.

I have to confess that, while I find this behaviour a tad odd, I could do with taking a leaf out of this man’s scrap book and storing all of my debit and credit card statements because, when it comes to doing my self-assessment, I can get into an awful mess trying to track down what payment was for what item. Plus, as someone with many visible obsessions and a passion for collecting, I can see where this collecting habit is coming from.

The short film was the MOFILM winner at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and was created for Santander by Chris Bailey and Jake Naish. MOFILM gives help to people who want to break into the film business by putting them in contact with some of the world’s biggest brands, who provide the financial backing for projects that would otherwise never have happened. This results in some truly delightful little films from some very talented filmmakers, all with a twist or a point to make.

What is really touching about this short film is that doesn’t attempt to ridicule the subject, or to make him a figure of fun – as so many genuine documentary programs currently airing in TV do so often.

Have a watch and see what you think of The Keeper.

Have you ever wanted to appear in a movie, a proper movie? Most film fans will be shouting out loud and proud right now a definite YES! Well, if that is the case you’ll be interested in ‘Inside – A Social Film Experience’, where the filmmakers are looking for people to participate in this engrossing horror movie.

Confused? Fear not, all will be explained. Film director DJ Coruso, responsible for the horror/thriller ‘Disturbia’, with Shia LaBeouf, is directing this social film with the backing of technology giants Toshiba and Intel. The film itself is a new genre all of its own, and will utilise Hollywood techniques with cutting edge technology to create a ‘live’ film experience where other cast members, possibly you, can participate over the Internet via the medium of social media.

By using social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube you others will be able to assist lead actress Emmy Rossum in her battle for survival, as she has only her laptop and an Internet connection to help her survive.

The film event of the decade begins on July 25th, and you can find out more from the official website here, or by watching the trailer below.

As well as Emmy, one of the stars of the film is the new Toshiba laptop, with an Intel Core i7 Processor. On the official site for the film you can also find out more about this laptop, and just why it will help Emmy survive ‘Inside’.

Transformers fans from UK website TheTransformers.Net managed to get themselves on the press list for this last weekend’s UK premiere of Transformers Dark of the Moon at the BFI IMAX in London. The fans, looking rather nervous at the prospect of interviewing a film director and, more significantly, an underwear model, managed to maintain their cool long enough to interview both Michael Bay and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, the successor to Megan Fox in the Transformers franchise.

You can watch the video interview here, where the fan asking the questions actually mentioned ‘underwear modelling’ to Rosie without salivating… which seemed like a major victory for him.

With every new format comes the chance to release box-sets of classic movies once again; those movies that, regardless of whether we’ve seen them a thousand times or whether we already own them on numerous formats, they become must have purchases. Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Back to the Future – these are all box-sets that film fans will have to buy on each and every format on which they become available, and the Superman movies are no exception – only this time the movies also include Superman Returns, the 2006 movie starring Brandon Routh as the red caped one, rather than Christopher Reeve.

The original two Superman movies, unknown to many, were actually filmed back to back, so assured were Warner Brothers that the first movie would be successful. They were on pretty safe ground mind you, considering they had a cast that included Marlon Brando, Terrence Stamp and Gene Hackman – these guys wouldn’t put their names to just anything.

The first Superman exists on this Blu-Ray set in different formats, with the option of watching a full, extended version or even a version devoid of dialogue and sound effects, so you can really appreciate the music of John Williams – possibly the greatest film music composer of all time. The extended version of the film does make the movie drag on considerably (especially considering the original Superman was a lengthy film anyway) and contains additional scenes from the Superman and Lois flight sequence, more scenes from Krypton before the planet exploded and even a scene where Superman seeks his father’s advice on showing off.

As good as the first Superman movie is, and it is good, it’s the second film where the franchise really gets going. There are few movies where the sequel is arguably better than the original, Godfather II, Empire Strikes Back for example, but Superman II is without question one of them. Superman II is all love story, much like George Lucas’ second Star Wars instalment, set against the backdrop of an impending crisis. The three super-villains, imprisoned in the Phantom Zone, have escaped and are heading to Earth to rule. Terrence Stamp, as General Zod, is in imperial form and seems to be loving every second of it. Gene Hackman returns in even more evil and despicable mode than he was in the first film, attempting to ally himself with the evil trio and the final climactic battle between Superman and the evil super-villains, that takes the whole film to build up to, doesn’t disappoint – even if there is an awful lot of product placement during the battle for brands such as Coca Cola, KFC and Marlborough.

The moment where the evil super-villains are in the Daily Planet office and newspapers heralding Superman’s disappearance are blown away by a returning Superman, asking General Zod if he would ‘care to step outside’ is a classic moment of cinema.

One thing that has always bugged me about the Superman universe, from The Adventures of Lois and Clark, to Smallville, to Superman Returns is the way in which Clark Kent is portrayed. Dean Caine once stated that he hated the way that Christopher Reeve portrayed Clark as a bumbling fool. Therefore, he played Clarke and Superman in exactly the same way. This theme of blandness was carried through by Tom Welling and Brandon Routh, both of whom insisted that Clark Kent was a suave character exactly the same as Superman. It’s for this reason that it’s Christopher Reeve’s performance as Clark, not as Superman, that he should be best remembered for.

Reeve was an excellent Clark Kent, with comic timing and slapstick ability in spades. One of the standout moments for me, besides the opening of Superman III with the battery operated toys, was the subtlety with which Reeve changed his stance in Superman II when he revealed himself to Lois as being Superman. His gawky, slightly hunched stance that was Kent was replaced by the upright, boy-scout styled stance of Superman.

It’s subtleties like these that other actors to the role seem to have completely missed, making Christopher Reeve the definitive Kent and Superman.

While we’re on the subject of the leads, something which grated on me about the first, and to a lesser extent the second, Superman movies is the character of Lois Lane. She is supposed to be this strong willed, forthright woman who knows what she wants and knows how to get it. Yet, for some reason, Margot Kidder plays Lois as a bit of screamer. Even when she’s defying the mugger in the first Superman she kicks out at his gun before turning away and screaming. Her attempts to free herself from the car as it is buried under dirt at the end of the film, and her attempts to escape the helicopter precariously perched atop the Daily Planet building both involve copious amounts of screaming for help.

These are not the actions of a strong willed woman, and certainly differ from the way Kate Bosworth played Lois in Superman Returns.

Superman III and Superman IV The Quest for Piece follow on from the first two (we say that because, like Terminator Salvation, Superman Returns seems to pick up where Superman II left off – ignoring the later films). Superman III, despite a few dodgy moments with some computer graphics (it’s always hard for films of this era to use computers considering how far advanced they have become in the last decade) is a thoroughly enjoyable movie. Richard Prior, one of the biggest comedians at the time and usual film cohort of Gene Wilder, is hilarious and Robert Vaughan seems to relish the role as an evil businessman intent on taking over the world.

The scene where Clark battles Superman in the junkyard is compelling, and has one of those spine tingling moments than run rampant through the first two movies.

Superman IV however is a tragic let down. The film seems to use the same footage over and over again (over Superman flying towards the camera) merely changing the blue screen background, and it’s full of plot holes. We can accept that Superman can breathe in space, fair enough, but Lacy Warfield (Mariel Hemingway)? The shot of Superman holding Lacy while in space is even used as the image for the Blu-Ray menu, which is actually one grumble I have with the set; the menus haven’t really had any love applied to them at all, they’re very basic – which is a shame when you consider what is possible with Blu-Ray menu systems.

Finally we have Superman Returns. This film received a fair bit of criticism when it was released, but unfairly in my opinion. The decision to keep the original intro sequence was inspired, and using footage of Marlon Brando was genius. Brandon Routh was no Reeve, for sure, but Kevin Spacey was a more than capable replacement for Gene Hackman and the effects were first class. The ‘return’ sequence of Superman saving the place from crashing into the baseball stadium, holding it up while stood on the pitcher’s mound, was iconic and, as I’ve mentioned earlier in this review, I thought Kate Bosworth did a much better job as Lois than Margot Kidder.

To be honest, no matter what special features were included, what the menus were like or even what the packaging was like, this set would be worth it solely for Superman II – for my money the best superhero movie to date (though Batman Begins runs it close!).

Alberta Cross, one of the leading lights from the music world and hailing from Brooklyn, New York, have teamed up with Ketel One, the vodka brand to come out of the Netherlands, to promote the vodka to the world via their music, and the Internet.

Alberta Cross’ track ‘Money for the Weekend’ has been shot as a vodka commercial for the Internet, and has been directed by David O. Russell, an acclaimed film director who was responsible for recent Mark Wahlberg hit ‘The Fighter’, and Wahlberg and George Clooney star vehicle ‘Three Kings’.

This particular video sees the band, Alberta Cross, playing an intimate gig for close friends in the basement of a nightclub, spurred on by some Ketel One vodka. The ads are showing on US TV in 30 second spots, and a fuller version can be seen below, and on the Facebook Page of the band. The below video already has over 200,000 views on YouTube, despite only being added a short number of weeks ago.

Petter Ericson Stakee, the lead singer of Alberta Cross, commented about the band’s deal with Ketel One:

“Ketel One has always been one of our top drink choices on the road, so it’s fantastic to feel the mutual love.”

The adverts, featuring Alberta Cross, are part of Ketel One’s current campaign of adverts to roll out across the US featuring the slogan “Gentlemen, This is Vodka”.

Alberta Cross’ new album, from which the single ‘Money for the Weekend’ is taken, is being released shortly as part of the vodka brand campaign.

Using the Internet and music to advertise brands such as Ketel One is a great idea as it gets around many of the restrictions faced by TV advertising across the world, in particular here in the UK where alcohol advertising on TV is very closely monitored.
